Honest appraisal of the poor dynamics involved….. by the Palestinians , who perversely alwalys felt they had the stronger negotiating hand ( so would’nt yield ) , and the Israelis who are offering even less or nothing today under Netanyahu.
Maybe Netanyahu’s position of just moving in concrete and discrete steps is really the only solution. Its just his direction that is questionable. The Economy and stability of the West Bank is crucial to this. But keep on building Jewish enclaves in the West Bank and your schizophrenic approach will lead down the path of failure yet again.
In essence , the methodology is just right…but the ideaology is bankrupt.

Palestinians feel the weight of history is with them …so they don’t need to yield too much.
“The Palestinian approach was in principle the demand of 100 percent of their rights from 1967. The practical aspect interested them less. They are not willing to discuss any further compromise,” he said. “We tried to build scenarios, some of them were imaginary, about specific compromises, but we found the Palestinians taking an approach of ‘all or nothing.’”
And here’s some re-wrting of history.Make sure your previous negotiating positions are not available to be held against you ..especially when you have far less to offer this time around
| “When I went to look for the material from the year 2000 [from Camp David talks and Taba] we could find anything. It seems as though someone made sure it disappeared. That is why we restarted collecting the material, and were assisted by documents from the Geneva Convention,” Dekel said.Responding to Dekel, Shaul Arieli, who coordinated the negotiating task force a decade before him, said that when his teams ended their activity in 2000 they lodged all the relevant documents with the national archive and the prime minister’s office.”Therefore,” Arieli said. “If you did not find the material, then someone worked very, very hard, for the material to disappear.”
Strange ..but really this is a problem of the political classes…not of a political problem.Because the political solution has been staring at us for decades and it is the only way out.All other avenues end in disaster for Isreal and Palestine. The political classes have not been able to live up to the ‘raison d’etre’ of their jobs….which is get your hands dirty…negotiate and solve. The Palestinians have post-Arafat political dwarfism ( Hamas vs Fatah squabbling ) and the Israelis have actually decided just to manage their own and Palestinian failure but selecting a favourable pathway that just entrenches them further deeper in the mire. |
